Retirement Annuity Plan

What is a Retirement Annuity Plan?

The retirement annuity plan was the predecessor to the personal pension. As such no new plans could be started after 1988, although most will continue to accept additional premiums.

The retirement annuity plan is very similar to the personal pension. However, the retirement annuity plan offers some distinct advantages:

  • Contributions are not subject to any earnings cap
  • tax free cash can sometime be higher than under a personal pension

However, employers may not pay into a retirement annuity plan, and contributions must be linked to earnings.
