Open Market Option

What is an Open Market Option?

An open market option is relevant if you have a pension fund and are about to retire. When you retire you will need to buy an income for your retirement using a pension annuity.

Until the open market option It used to be the case that people would save for retirement and then buy their annuity from the same company that had provided their pension. The idea of an open market option is that you no longer have to do this.

When you come to retire, you can exercise the open market option and shop around for the best pension that you can get. This means that you should be able to obtain better terms than you would have done if you had remained with your original pension provider.
